Seoul, Nov 21 (UNI) The South Korean Marine Corps is holding large-scale landing drills in the city of Pohang amid missile threats allegedly posed by North Korea, with nearly 3,400 marines and more than 30 assault vehicles involved in the exercise, the Yonhap news agency reported on Tuesday, citing military officials.
The six-day drills kicked off on Friday, 163 miles southeast of Seoul, the marine corps was cited as saying by the news agency.
On Tuesday, the military personnel practiced the "decisive action" stage, which involves the training of warships, transport aircraft and helicopters in a coastal area, Yonhap reported, adding that the exercise phase involved the Chungmugong Yi Sun-sin destroyer.
The training took place against the background of another South Korean defense exercise, Hoguk, which is being held from October 16 to November 22 to boost Seoul's ability to respond to North Korea's alleged nuclear and military threats, Yonhap reported.
The developments come amid Pyongyang's plans to attempt a new satellite launch between November 22 and 30, media reported. A South Korean military official told journalists earlier on Tuesday that Seoul expected North Korea to attempt the launch of the military reconnaissance satellite as early as November 22.
